Wondering how to spend the Australia Day public holiday? Here’s all you need to know about retailers’ opening hours and which events are going ahead in Victoria.
Shopping Centres
Victoria’s popular shopping malls will remain open. However shops within the centres may not be open depending on their trading hours.
Chadstone: 10am — 5pm.
Eastland: 10am — 5pm.
Highpoint: 10am — 5pm.
Westfield Shopping Centres: Airport West, Southland, Doncaster, Fountain gate, Knox, Plenty Valley and Geelong Westfield Shopping Centres will be open from 10am — 5pm.
DFO: Essendon, South Wharf, Moorabbin and Uni Hill DFOs will be open from 10am — 5pm.
Museums and Art Galleries
Melbourne Museum: 10am — 5pm.
Immigration Museum: 10am — 5pm.
Scienceworks: 10am — 4.30pm.
Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre: 9am — 5pm.
Imax Melbourne: The first screening is at 11.30am and the last screening is at 6.10pm.
The NGV: Will still be hosting events and have altered opening hours so be sure to check their website or social media for specific hours and bookings.
Supermarkets
Most Coles, Woolworths and Aldi stores will be open with their normal trading hours on
Wednesday with the exception of some stores. Make sure to check your local store’s opening hours before heading out.
Restaurants, Bars or cafes
Many restaurants, bars and cafes will be closed or have altered work hours. Please check
their website or social media pages for their specific opening hours.
Bottle Shops
Dan Murphy’s, BWS, Liquorland, First Choice and Vintage Cellars will all be open and trading on regular hours.
Post Offices
In observance of the public holiday, all post offices will be closed on Australia Day.
Public Transport
Public transport services including trains, trams, buses and regional trains and coaches will operate to a Saturday timetable, but some services may be altered or will not run. Please view the PTV timetables for your specific line or route before you travel.

Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony
The Official Flag Raising Ceremony marks the beginning of Melbourne’s Australia Day
festivities.

A 21-Gun Salute on the Lower Forecourt.

Australia Day Victoria and Fed Square brings you free family entertainment and free food
this Australia Day.

Australia Day free public concert
A free public concert featuring many Victorian artists will be headlined by Daryl Braithwaite, supported by Pierce Brothers, Darlinghurst and more.

Summer Nights Drone Show — Docklands
This Australia Day see the night sky sparkle as 350 drones light up Docklands to tell stories in the stars.
